UAE Floods: Heavy Rains Inundate Dubai and Oman

Record Rainfall Brings Widespread Flooding

April 16, 2024 | 2:44 PM PDT

Torrential rains have caused severe flooding in parts of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman, leading to the closure of schools and major highways. The heavy downpour, which began on Tuesday, is associated with a larger storm system traversing the Arabian Peninsula.

In Dubai, record rainfall has inundated portions of the city, with over half a foot of rain falling within a 24-hour period. According to official records, this is the equivalent of two years' worth of rainfall in a single day.

The flooding has caused significant disruptions to traffic and public transportation. Major roads in Dubai, including Sheikh Zayed Road, have been closed due to flooding. The Dubai International Airport has also been affected by the weather conditions, with some flights delayed or canceled.

In Oman, the heavy rains have led to at least 18 deaths, according to local authorities. The rains have caused flash floods and landslides in several areas of the country, including the capital city of Muscat.

The storm system is expected to continue, bringing more rain to the region in the coming days. Residents are urged to stay informed and follow safety guidelines to avoid any potential hazards.
